I was watching a new program called “Kevin Probably Saves The World” last night. Kevin is the last righteous person on earth and he has been sent a helper from above to keep him safe and train him to complete his mission, a mission he does not know he is here to complete, of course. He did not know he is righteous, much less the only righteous person left on earth. His angelic helper tells him to learn to listen to the universe so that he will know how to help others, which will build his spiritual energy and abilities. He wakes up the next morning early and tells her that listening is too time consuming and he is going to go out find people to help instead of listening. Of course, the very persistent universe quickly shows him otherwise. I love watching his logic because this humorously demonstrates the ego taking over for the universe. Instead of listening to the universe, Kevin decides that he will guide the universe. In a way it is like the choice between allowing the ego to guide your life rather than becoming one with the universe.
How do we know who to help and what would be helpful? Who should you offer your loving kindness to and why? Hint: Offer loving kindness to everyone according to the divine. The ego can go in so many directions with its advice. It tells us it is a good idea to withhold love and kindness. It can advise us to help cure an alcoholic when we are not a treatment facility. It can make excuses for self-defeating behaviors and it can refuse to offer love and forgiveness to those we deem guilty. It can advise who is worthy of our attention and who is not. It can judge and it can ignore. It can dismiss and it can enable but in the long run, the ego does not have the answer. The brain, the filters, the voices in the head arising out of the past fuel the ego’s choices about our relationships with others. The ego or the mind is lacking information, making up facts, and believing these erroneous facts as the truth. Then, the mind bases your choices about how to treat others on these lies.
More unfortunately, if what you choose to do with others does not work, the ego has infinite capacity to blame the other person for its failure or to make you feel guilty and ashamed of your failure. In other words, the ego will blame you or the other person and still miss or purposely withhold the point that it did not know what it is doing.
A Course in Miracles offers us some advice that I read in here frequently and keep posted in my bathroom about how to make these choices when it says, “I am here only to be truly helpful. I am here to represent him who sent me. I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do because he who sent me will direct me. I am content to be wherever he wishes, knowing he goes there with me. I will be healed as I let him teach me to heal.” Remember A Course in Miracles is using the word “he” as it was commonly used at the time it was published but you can replace the word with divinity, mother/father, God, or oneness.
As the program continued, the signs were so obvious and funny. A hospital sign would fall in front of Kevin as he walked. As he tried to ignore the sign to go to the hospital, the universe kept getting louder and louder, multiple ambulances pass by and finally as he keeps ignoring the universe because he is angry, he gets an injury requiring a trip to the emergency room. Years ago it occurred to me that if I could just listen to the universe the first time it talked to me then I could avoid the sledgehammer sign. Obviously, I am still fairly hardheaded to reach at times!
Suspending the mind or ego basically takes practice. It is so compellingly believable when it judges and decides. It sounds true. However, just observing its shenanigans will show you its motivations. It may feel self-righteous or sort of happy about the failure of others. It can masquerade its motives as helpful because you feel sorry for or pity someone. To be truly helpful involves letting go and allowing the universe to guide you. As you surrender, you are guided. Always, you can default to kindness and loving energy when you do not have a clear sign or direction.
The week after the shooting in Las Vegas I was immersed in the reality over and over of being on a field with each victim reliving the nightmare of that night. When this week started, I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that because I had scheduled Continuing Education days this week, I would get some time away from therapy to regroup, said my ego. When I arrive at the location for these classes, slowly I realize that the universe has planned months ago for me to decide to stay in town for these classes because of not wanting to leave puppy Ellis yet and that the location of this event would be at the Tropicana Hotel, next to the field with all the traumatized hotel workers as I listen to trauma training advice. On the second day as I am leaving the workshops, I ask the Valet about the field and he tells me his trauma story. Then, I realize that the universe decides once again who I will give my attention to even when I think I am doing something else. “I am here only to be truly helpful.” I do not have to know or understand how to be helpful because the universe will guide me and will guide you. I was allowed to listen to someone who most likely will never have a therapist, shaman or minister to hear his story otherwise.
Surrender and allow yourself to be played by the light.
The Compassion Lesson for today is Chapter Fifteen in A Year of Living with more Compassion – 52 Quotes and Weekly Compassion Practices (Edited by Richard Fields) pp. 48-49. Susan Kaiser Greenland, JD chose this quote, “There is such a thing as raw, unalloyed agendaless, kindness.” By David Foster Wallace in his book, Infinite Jest (1996)
Practice: Take a deep breath, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Relax when you exhale. Take deep connected breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Relax. Allow any thoughts to drift away and out of awareness. Allow any feelings to drift away and out of awareness. Allow any emotions to drift away and out of awareness. Imagine a brilliant golden white light is all around you and entering through the top of your head. As you inhale and exhale, you are inhaling and exhaling this beautiful golden white light. Surrender to the light. Let go and completely become one with the light. Remember the light is who you really are. Surrender to who you really are, a divine light, one with everything and everything is talking to you. Listen.
